The 10 main types

Higher the clouds, finer the weather!

  • (king) CUMULUS – fluffy clouds, drifting lazily across sunny days. However, can form into bigger ones and Cumulonimbus.

  • CIRROcumulus – like rippled sand. Omen of fair weather, usually follows a storm. Dissipate to clear blue sky.

  • ALTOcumulus – fair weather, thicker. Usually post storm

  • CUMULOnimbus – gathers like an anvil in the sky.

  • CIRRUS – high and wispy.

  • CIRROstratus – rain/snow coming

  • ALTOstratus – boring, wet weather, featureless, overcast.

  • NIMBOstratus – steady rain/snow. Depressing.

  • STRATOcumulus – Form a low, rolling mass. Light showers but usually dissipates afternoon.

  • STRATUS – hill fog. Drizzle. Thick overnight, usually followed by fine day.
